Unusually
for us, we left Airlie Beach at the planned time, we were on the road heading
north by 8.00am.
Back
on the Bruce Highway, but this section was a lot more interesting than the one
from Yeppoon to Mackay, although still not much to report. Fairly uneventful journey, made good time,
covered 323 kms in 4 hours.
As
we got further north we suspected that things were getting hotter outside, as
we passed through the town of Ayr our suspicions were confirmed: it was 37
degrees and it was only 10.30am!!!
We
stepped out of Muriel in Townsville, which will be our base for the next 2
nights and were hit with a wall of heat and humidity, according to the locals
they expected it to stay this way for the next 2 days at least. But at least it’s better than the rain!!
We
had hoped to make our way out to the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow, unfortunately
the trips from Townsville do not run on Wednesdays and therefore we will have
to wait until we reach Cairns so we had a quick re-jig of our plans and spent
the afternoon looking round Townsville (in search of Air-Con) and tomorrow we
are heading across to Magnetic Island for the day.
Townsville
is quite quaint with a number of the original building still clearly recognizable
(even if there use has changed to be a trendy bar or nightclub!). We
went to the Coral Reef Centre hoping to find a sustained period of air
conditioning instead we were treated to a look round the turtle hospital where
they rehabilitate injured Green Turtles before being released back into the sea
– bless them.
We
are both feeling quite drained by the journey and the heat and therefore are having
another Jonny BBQ spectacular this evening.
Another early night!!
